新宝测速6:Hiroshima University Associate Professor Shota Fujihara receives the 24th Osaragi Jiro Rondan Prize

On December 24, 2024, Associate Professor Shota Fujihara from the Humanities Program of the Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences (specializing in Western History) received the 24th Osaragi Jiro Rondan Prize for his book Brumaire 18th - The Fear and Desire of Revolutionaries (Keio University Press).

This award was established in 2001 as an addition to the Osaragi Jiro Prize, which was created in 1973 to honor the achievements of writer Jiro Osaragi, who excelled in a wide range of fields, including fiction, nonfiction, and historical writing. It aims to recognize outstanding essays and analyses on topics related to Japan’s politics, economy, society, culture, and international relations.

Associate Professor Shota Fujihara

Associate Professor Fujihara, upon receiving the award commented: "I am honored to receive the 24th Osaragi Jiro Rondan Prize from The Asahi Shimbun for my book Brumaire 18th - The Fear and Desire of Revolutionaries. Traditionally, the event of the 18th of Brumaire has been told from Napoleon’s perspective. However, in my book, I deliberately chose not to mention Napoleon and instead reinterpreted the event as one where pro-constitutional amendment revolutionaries, seeking to protect their own interests, elevated Napoleon to power. At the end of the French Revolution, as revolutionaries became increasingly fixated on short-term gains, repeatedly compromised, and gradually abandoned their original ideals, dictatorship emerged as a natural consequence. This process offers many lessons for us living in the present day. Moving forward, I hope to further explore how the dictatorship established by these revolutionaries was maintained and sustained over time."
