On September 20, 2024, Hiroshima University (HU) invited Professor Wooseung Kim, former president of Hanyang University (Republic of Korea), to the Higashi-Hiroshima Campus to give a lecture on the theme of “University growth through lecture innovation that strengthens industry-university linkages.”
Professor Kim was for many years a professor of the Mechanical Engineering Department at the College of Engineering and Science of Hanyang University, one of the largest private universities in Korea, founded in 1939. He became the 15th President of Hanyang University in 2019, and led the university with his outstanding skills and strong leadership until 2023, enhancing the university's education, research, and reputation. During his tenure as president, he not only introduced the Industry Advisory Board, the first of its kind at a Korean university, but also contributed to the promotion of industry-academia collaboration and the development of human resources for science and technology innovation by developing advanced educational models such as IC-PBL (Industry-Coupled Project/Problem-Based Learning), in which industry, society, and universities work together to solve problems. He is currently a distinguished professor at Hanyang University and the president of the Accreditation Board for Engineering Education of Korea (ABEEK), where he is committed to quality assurance in engineering education.
In his lecture, Professor Kim introduced the case of the United States and stressed the need to fundamentally reform education, especially lectures, and to shift to courses that cultivate problem-solving skills for realistic problems, as the recent remarkable development of online education and the spread of various digital certification systems have put traditional universities in a critical situation. He also introduced the significance of IC-PBL (Industry-Coupled Project/Problem-Based Learning), which was undertaken at Hanyang University as one of their lecture reforms, as well as case studies. In addition, he shared his experience of introducing an Industry Advisory Board for each degree program in order to collaborate with companies for this purpose. It was a stimulating opportunity to hear a lecture which may lead to new initiatives at HU, and the audience of about 30 people listened attentively to the end of the lecture and engaged in a lively exchange of ideas. After the lecture, President Ochi presented Professor Kim with a certificate of appreciation and a commemorative gift, which was met with thunderous applause.
Prior to the lecture, Professor Kim met with President Ochi and Executive Vice President (Global Initiatives) Kaneko, followed by a campus tour introducing the Town & Gown Initiative and carbon neutrality initiatives jointly promoted by HU and Higashihiroshima City, and then a visit to a laboratory in the School of Engineering.
HU has concluded 19 inter-university international exchange agreements with 12 institutions and 35 inter-faculty international exchange agreements with 26 institutions in Korea. Currently, there are 25 international students from Korea studying at HU. With this visit, HU will promote exchange with Hanyang University as well as other universities and research institutions in Korea.
